XXXV Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery

This was a unit of Britain’s pre-war regular army. It is also sometimes shown as 35 Brigade RFA.

History

  • This brigade was originally comprised of numbers 12, 25 and 58 Batteries and a Brigade Ammunition Column.
  • It was based at Woolwich in August 1914. In September 1914 it moved to Ashurst in the New Forest of Hampshire and was placed under command of the new 7th Division.
  • The brigade departed from Southampton on 4 October 1914 and landed at Zeebrugge in Belgium on 6 October. It continued toi serve with 7th Division for the rest of the war, being in France and Flanders until late 1917 when it moved to northern Italy.
    • 16 May 1916: the Brigade Ammunition Column left, to be merged into 7th Divisional Ammunition Column.
    • 17 May 1916: 31 (Howitzer) Battery, less one section, joined from 37 (Howitzer) Brigade (also in 7th Division but which was being broken up). It was made up to full strength on 13 February 1917 by the arrival of a section from 509 (Howitzer) Battery.
