My new article “Ambulance Train evacuation of casualties from the Third Battle of Ypres” (link below) brings out some remarkable statistics.
For example, on 1 August 1917, a staggering total of 3,624 wounded and sick casualties were evacuated by six Ambulance Trains from one single station alone. This was Remy Siding, adjacent to the group of Casualty Clearing Stations at Remy Farm, often known as Lijssenthoek.
Of these casualties, 151 were officers and 3,473 were other ranks.
And of the total, 993 were lying cases (that is, borne by stretcher and accommodated on the beds/bunks with which Ambulance Trains were fitted) and 2,480 were able to sit.
It goes without saying that the human effort and logistical effort must have been prodigious.
