4th Mounted Division

History of the 4th Mounted Division

The division was formed on 20 March 1916 by bringing together three existing mounted brigades of the “second line” of the Territorial Force, and adding the newly-formed 2/1st Southern Mounted Brigade. It was headquartered at Colchester and remained as part of the home defence force.

Early in July 1916 the yeomanry regiments were dismounted and converted into cyclist regiments, and later in the month the 4th Mounted Division became the 2nd Cyclist Division.
