CLXXII Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery

History

  • This brigade was formed in England, comprising a headquarters, numbers 389, 390, 391 and 392 Batteries (each of six 18-pounder field guns) and a Brigade Ammunition Column.
  • It landed at Le Havre in France on 11 July 1917 and proceeded to Marseilles for onward journey to Egypt. It arrived at Alexandria on 23 July 1917.
  • 29 August 1917: still at Alexandria, 389 and 390 Batteries became A and B Batteries of 37 Brigade RFA (they eventually physically joined the brigade at Kantara on 2 September).
  • Also 29 August 1917: 391 and 392 Batteries were renamed as A and B.
  • Also 29 August 1917: the Brigade Ammunition Column left to become 3 Section of the 75th Divisional Ammunition Column.
  • 5-6 September 1917: the brigade arrived to join 75th Division at Deir-el-Belah.
  • 23 September 1917: 406 (Howitzer) Brigade (four 4.5-inch howitzers) arrived at Alexandria from England via France. It moved to join the brigade at Deir-el-Balah on 12 October 1917 and was renamed as C (Howitzer) Battery,
  • During October 1917 the letters were dropped and the batteries once again known by their original number titles.
