Ambulance Train evacuation of casualties from the Third Battle of Ypres

This article is a summary of the activity of the evacuation by Ambulance Train of wounded, sick and injured casualties from the Ypres sector in the period 24 July to 17 November 1917. My date range is wider than the normal definition of the Third Battles of Ypres (31 July to 10 November), to cover the period of the initial artillery bombardment and a week after the final date. The data has been derived from the war diaries of the Ambulance Trains, all of which are held at the National Archives at Kew, London. My geographic scope includes the area of action comprising the Ypres salient and the Messines ridge.

An Ambulance Train would typically carry 400-500 casualties.

An illustrative example of the war diary of 4 Ambulance Train [National Archives WO95/4131]. At 4pm on 1 August 1917 it arrived at Mendinghem, having come empty from Boulogne. It loaded 17 officers (12 lying, 5 sitting) and 290 other ranks (all lying). At 8pm it departed for Boulogne. After offloading the casualties to the group of base hospitals there, ithad a trip for more at Lapugnoy. On 3 August it picked up at Remy Siding, and it was there again on 7 August.

Research tips

If you are exceptionally lucky, you may find your soldier’s service record and it will tell you (normally by text AT and its number) the Ambulance Train by which he was evacuated. All of the war diaries of trains exist and can be downloaded from the National Archives website. Look up the dates and you will find not only his point of embarkation (shown on this page) but where he was bound.

You may locate him in one of the few hospital admissions registers (National Archives series MH106, now digitised and available via Findmypast). They often give, again normally by text AT and its number, the Ambulance Train by which he was evacuated and the date of departure.

If you are not so lucky and are researching a soldier who became a wounded or gassed casualty and you know an approximate date, it is usually possible by some detective work to track his movements from the location of his unit to the Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) to which he would have been admitted (usually on the day or within a day or two) by reference to the war diaries of the medical units of the division or corps under which his unit came. Once you know the location of the CCS you can match it to the departure points of the Ambulance Trains, as listed below. Most men were only at a CCS for a short time. The war diary of the Ambulance Train provides information about departure and arrival times, hospital destinations, and exactly how many casualties were carried (and if any died on board they are usually named). It may help you identify the Base Hospital to which he was taken, or at least narrow down the possibilities.

Rail routes from Casualty Clearing to Base Hospital

For the destination of any given departure, consult the war diary of the Ambulance Train involved.

Destinations

From the British Official History of Medical Services. Essentially, a map of the destinations of the Ambulance Trains. By March 1918, the situation was not greatly changed since Third Battle of Ypres. Ypres itself is not shown but is at the top right, in Belgium.
Imperial War Museum photograph Q2542. “British Red Cross Society, Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) drivers running to their ambulances following the signal indicating the arrival of an ambulance train at Etaples, France, on 27 June 1917”. The casualties offloaded from the Ambulance Trains were taken, mainly by motor ambulance, to the Base Hospitals.

Routes

The network operated by “Compagnie du Nord” in 1914. The Ambulance Trains generally moved westwards from the Ypres area (top right) to Boulogne, Etaples and much further on to Rouen, Le Treport and elsewhere.

Points of departure

From the British Official History of the Medical Services. A list of locations of medical units that were part of Fifth Army when it began the Third Ypres offensive. Many of the locations named were also points where casualties were loaded onto Ambulance Trains.
Same source: the key points of evacuation by rail are highlighted.
Part of a map from the British Official History, showing several of the key points where casualties were loaded onto Ambulance Trains. Railhoek (un-named on this map but at “Nine Elms” shown above) is highlighted.

Some facts arising from analysis

By extracting the information from the war diaries and tabulating them as I have below, facts emerge that might otherwise be hidden.

In the 116 days covered by this analysis, a total of 640 Ambulance Train loads took casualties from the battle to the Base Hospitals. On average, this is 5.5 trains per day. This equates to a total of somewhere in the region of 256000-320000 casualties. It would be possible to obtain an exact figure, for the war diaries invariably provide the details for each departure. The figure does not, of course, include those men who were not evacuated by Ambulance Train. This includes men killed in action or who died between battle and the Casualty Clearing Stations, casualties who were evacuated by Ambulance Barge, and casualties who could be treated locally and did not require evacuation to Base Hospital.

The busiest day for departures was 1 August 1917, when 19 trains departed. There were nine other days that saw 10 or more trains depart.

The busiest point of departure was Remy Siding (Lijssenthoek).

By embarkation location

By locations at which casualties were boarded onto Ambulance Trains. For the destination of any given departure, consult the war diary of the Ambulance Train involved.

If a Train loaded casualties at more than one station, they are shown, for example as X (then Y) or B (from A)
