Military hospitals in Warwickshire

This is a list of hospitals used for treatment of military casualties during the Great War that were situated in the County of Warwickshire as it was at the time. The cities of Coventry and much of Birmingham were situated within the county before boundary changes that took place in 1974.

Major hospitals

  • Birmingham: 1st Southern General Hospital. Technically a unit of the Territorial Force, although it had a small administrative headquarters located at Great Brook Street before the war and its staff trained part-time, it only came into practical existence at the mobilisation of the army in August 1914. The hospital was established at Birmingham University, Edgbaston, and received its first casualties on 1 September 1914 and was initially equipped for 520 beds. Note that it was situated close to the county boundary with Worcestershire. Selly Oak Goods Station, where casualties for the hospital arrived by train, was on the other side of the boundary. This was also true of the Highbury Hall, King’s Heath, Monyhull, Selly Oak and Stirchley annexes that the hospital opened in schools and other public buildings in the area, and the 1st and 2nd Birmingham War Hospitals at Rubery and Hollymoor.
  • Birmingham: 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road. Orginally a section of the 1st Southern General it became a separate unit from 1 June 1917. Eventually 920 beds.
  • Birmingham: General Hospital, Steelhouse Lane (100 military beds in civilian hospital)
  • Birmingham: Queen’s Hospital, Bath Row (158 military beds in civilian hospital)
  • Coventry: Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, Stoney Stanton Road (military ward in civilian hospital)
  • Leamington Spa: Warneford Hospital, Radford Road
