Military hospitals in Worcestershire

This is a list of hospitals used for treatment of military casualties during the Great War that were situated in the County of Worcestershire as it was at the time. Much of the city of Birmingham and parts of the southern “Black  Country” were situated within the county before boundary changes that took place in 1974.

Major hospitals

  • Birmingham: 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham University, Edgbaston (note that this was situated close to the county boundary with Warwickshire)
  • Birmingham: 1st Birmingham War Hospital. Formerly the Birmingham City Asylum at Rubery Hill.
  • Birmingham: 2nd Birmingham War Hospital. Formerly the Birmingham City Asylum at Hollymoor.
Highbury Hall. It was commissioned as his Birmingham residence by Joseph Chamberlain in 1878, two years after he became Member of Parliament for Birmingham. It took its name from the Highbury area of London, where Chamberlain had lived as a child. The house was used as an auxiliary hospital affiliated to the 1st Southern General. Alhough larger and grander than many, it was typical in being one of many large private residences turned over for such use. Image sourced from Geograph under Creative Commons Licenece, with thanks.
