Gazetteer of the Western Front: Eksternest

Location

Eksternest is referred to in a number of 1914 diaries and memoirs but does not appear in modern maps. Judging by this sketch map which appears in the memoir “The war diary of the Master of Belhaven” it appears to be what was and still is known as Westhoek. The source of the name of Eksternest is not known: a building on the spot before it was destroyed, perhaps?
