CCCL, CCCLI and XLIX Brigades of the Royal Field Artillery (71st Divisional Artillery)

The two brigades formed on 13 November 1916. Both were placed under orders of a new home defence formation, the 71st Division. The artillery brigades were assembled at Basingstoke, remaining until early March 1917 when the division concentrated in the Colchester area.

CCCL Brigade

  • A Battery had previously been known as 6th Provisional Brigade Field Battery. It joined on 27 November 1916 and was renamed 1208 Battery RFA on 1 January 1917.
  • B Battery had previously been A Battery of 321 Brigade RFA. It joined on 29 November 1916.
  • C (Howitzer) Battery had previously been A Battery of 320 Brigade RFA. It joined on 27 November 1916. Left to join XLIX Brigade of this division on 22 October 1917.
  • Brigade disbanded 25 February 1918.

CCCLI Brigade

  • A Battery had previously been A Battery of 322 Brigade RFA. It joined on 29 November 1916.
  • B Battery
  • C (Howitzer) Battery. Left to join XLIX Brigade of this division on 22 October 1917.
  • Brigade left on 25 February 1918, moved to Larkhill and remained there for the rest of the war.

72nd Divisional Ammunition Column

  • 6th Provisional Brigade Ammunition Column joined on 27 November 1916 and was renamed 71st Divisional Ammunition Column.
  • The column was broken up by 25 February 1918.

XLIX Brigade

  • Brigade formed at Colchester on 22 October 1917.
  • C (Howitzer) Battery joined from CCCL Brigade and was renamed as this brigade’s A Battery.
  • C (Howitzer) Battery joined from CCCLI Brigade and was renamed as this brigade’s B Battery.
  • Brigade left to join 67th Division on 12 February 1918 and was disbanded on 25 March 1918.
