Provisional Garrison Guard Battalions of the Labour Corps

On 30 April 1918, the following Area Employment (Garrison Guard) Companies of the Labour Corps were formed into Provisional Garrison Guard Battalions. This is recorded in the war diary of the Adjutant-General at the General Headquarters of the British Expeditionary Force (National Archives WO95/26):

  • 950 to 953 Area Employment (Garrison Guard) Companies became 1st Provisional Garrison Guard Battalion, located at Hauteville
  • 785, 869, 908 and 909 became 2nd Provisional Garrison Guard Battalion, located at Saulty
  • 848, 866, 894, 935 became 3rd Provisional Garrison Guard Battalion
  • 853, 878, 881 and 882 became 4th Provisional Garrison Guard Battalion, located at Habarcq
  • 934, 961, 962 and 1st Company of 1st (Reserve) Garrison Battalion of Suffolk Regiment became 5th Provisional Garrison Guard Battalion, located at Fosseux

Numbers 950 to 967 and 986 Area Employment (Garrison Guard) Companies had only been formed earlier in the same month.

On 26-30 May 1918, the Provisional Garrison Guard Battalions were redesignated:
